Lodge, Ardencraig, Ardencraig Road, Rothesay, Bute

The lodge at Ardencraig on Ardencraig Road in Rothesay, Bute, dates from the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house designed in a plain classical style, with a rectangular plan. A single-storey, single-bay addition is set back to the outer right.

The exterior features whitewashed rubble with painted margins and strip quoins. There is a raised string course and overhanging eaves supported by timber brackets. The windows have stepped hoodmoulds above them and projecting cills. The sides and rear of the building are constructed of random rubble.

On the entrance elevation, there is a central entrance at ground level with a replacement door and a stepped hoodmould above it, flanked by single windows. Each bay on the first floor also has a single window. The single-storey addition to the outer right includes a modern part-glazed timber door that is offset to the left of centre.

The lodge has replacement two-pane sash and case windows and a graded grey slate roof. The main block features coped, coursed sandstone chimney stacks at both the north and south ends, with octagonal cans, while the north side addition has a coped apex stack with a single circular can.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996.
