Description

The lodge at Allanbank on Manse Road in Lauder dates from the early 19th century and features a later 20th-century extension. It is a single-storey, double-fronted building with a rectangular plan that has been extended to an L-plan by the addition of a rear/west wing. The design is classical, highlighted by an open canted porch supported on Tuscan columns. The principal southeast elevation is finished in V-jointed sandstone ashlar, while the southwest side of the original building is constructed from rubble whinstone, and the northeast side features irregularly coursed dressed whinstone, both with polished ashlar dressings. The rear/northwest wing is harled. The building has a base course and a projecting eaves band, with V-jointed quoins.

The southeast elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central entrance with a canted open porch supported by four Tuscan columns. The entrance has a plain timber door with a four-light rectangular fanlight, flanked by windows. To the left, cast iron railings with some remaining crocketed finials adjoin the entrance, leading to the gates of Allanbank House.

On the northeast elevation, there is a wide architraved window with a droved outer long and short surround on the original building. The harled extension projects forward to the right, with an entrance on the left return.

The southwest elevation of the original building is blank, while there is a window in the harled extension to the left. The northwest elevation features three windows in the harled extension.

Inside, the lodge retains its original fireplace and grate in the front room to the left of the entrance. The original building has multi-pane casement windows and a grey slate roof, with a central ridge stack made of droved ashlar, raised in brick and rendered with a band course and round cans. The harled extension has a flat asphalted roof.
