Description
1-5 Albany Street in Oban is a four-storey Italianate tenement building, constructed around 1890 in two stages. It features a corner location with shops on the ground floor. The building has a four-bay elevation facing Argyll Square, with an additional bay in the chamfered northern corner. The layout is L-shaped, with the four outer right bays of the nine-bay Albany Street elevation splayed. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, while the rear and side elevations are harled.
Most of the original stone shopfronts remain, showcasing stall risers, boldly moulded door and window surrounds, and horizontal channelling on the wider vertical members. There is a continuous cornice above the shopfronts that is stepped, along with additional cornices at the first and second floors. The building features a substantial bracketed eaves cornice with a blocking course above.
The windows are architraved, with bracketed cornices above the first-floor windows, bracketed cills on the third floor, and aprons on the second floor of the main corner bays. The second floor of the corner building retains plate glass timber sash and case windows, with some also present on the rear elevation. The roof is modern and covered with grey tiles, and there is a square cast-iron downpipe at the eastern end of the Argyll Square elevation. A decorative panelled and corniced tablet-style wallhead stack is located at the top of the corner bay, with a bracketed base and octagonal cans. Flanking ridge stacks are made of ashlar and render, both topped with octagonal cans.
At the rear, there is a low single-storey stable with a hayloft attic, featuring a curved cut-away at the corner. It has a grey slate pitched roof and a slate-hung dormer with timber doors that break the eaves.
