East Beacon, Scurdie Ness

West Beacon and East Beacon are a pair of daymarks marking the entrance to Montrose Harbour at Scurdie Ness, where the River South Esk meets the sea.

The East Beacon is a sharply-tapering, conical structure made of white-washed rubble stone, standing around 4 meters tall with a graduated ashlar base. The West Beacon is situated higher up the shoreline; it is also conical in shape but has a flat top and is built from white-washed coursed and snecked masonry. At approximately 1.2 meters in height, the West Beacon may not retain its original height.

These beacons are believed to date from the 18th century and were constructed to assist vessels entering the port of Montrose. They are marked as 'beacon' on a chart of the harbour surveyed in 1833 and published in 1842. The Ordnance Survey Second Edition map of Forfarshire, published in 1904, identifies the West Beacon as a semaphore.
