Description

Garage Cottage at Balmuir House dates from the earlier 18th century and has been extended in the earlier 19th century, mid 19th century, and early 20th century. It is a single-storey, rectangular-plan steading type building, which has been extended to the west as cottages. The structure features rubble masonry, with a stugged finish on the mid 19th century addition at the west, and a graded stone slate roof, with grey slates on the west side of the north pitch. There is an early 20th century kitchen and washing house addition at the northwest, made of cream brick with a piended stone slate roof. Brick stacks are present, and the windows are mostly sash and case, with plate glass at the bottom and multi-pane at the top.

On the southeast elevation, the original building is on the right, featuring a doorway with pink sandstone margined quoins and boarded double doors (the inner door is of stable type), with a window to the right. The right return gable has two small boarded windows at attic level. The earlier 19th century addition is on the left, with a door at the centre, a bi-partite window to the left, and a window to the right. The mid 19th century addition is at the far left, with a door and later porch on the right, a window to the left, and a window on the left return gable.

On the northeast elevation, the original building is on the left, featuring a blocked doorway at the centre, a blocked arrow slit ventilator on both the left and right, later ventilator holes at the eaves, and a truncated ridge ventilator. The additions on the right include a window on both the left and right, with a later brick addition off-centre that has a door and windows.

Inside, the original building has a boarded coomb ceiling, while modern pig styes are present.
