Description
Ward is a building that likely dates from the late 18th century and was extended in 1849. It features an L-plan house and a steading range.
The house was originally a single-storey, three-bay structure with small windows. It was raised to two storeys, presumably around 1849, and now has three asymmetrically placed windows. Hipped dormers were added to the attic later. The front walls are lime washed, while the side and rear walls are harled. At the northern end, there is a set-back extension with a hipped roof and a small catslide roofed outshot on the north side. The ground floor and dormer windows are 4-pane sash and case, while the first-floor windows are 12-pane sash and case. The gable end features chimney stacks with modern cans. The roof has a slight bell cast and is slated over the skews with Scotch slate.
The steading is located to the south of the house and is adjoining. It is constructed from whinstone rubble with sandstone dressings, and it has a lintel dated 1849.
The main section of the steading is a single-storey and attic structure with five bays. At the southern end, there is a gabled loading bay for the attic. A picture window has been inserted in the center, and the openings are irregularly spaced. The roof is slated with a stone ridge. At the rear, there are later brick extensions that have been much altered. The range forms an L shape to the east at the southern end and has a hipped roof. A garage door has been inserted in the northern wall, and there is an outshot at the southeast corner with a catslide roof. The rear walls are harl pointed, and the roof is slated. The interior of the main range includes a stable with cast iron and wood trevises and wooden mangers, as well as a byre with stone slab or concrete trevises and fireclay mangers. On the southern elevation, to the left of the outshot, there is a door with chamfered reveals and a lintel carved with "IS AB 1688," which is likely a reinserted feature.
