Description

This is a hospital founded in the late 19th century by William Quarrier, who previously established the Quarrier Homes for orphans nearby. The hospital was developed in stages between 1894 and 1907, designed in a free revivalist style by Robert A Bryden of Glasgow. The buildings adopt a domestic character, reminiscent of large suburban villas, employing features such as canted windows, decorative eaves, complex roof forms, and sash or casement windows, reflecting a design movement aimed at reducing the institutional feel of hospitals. The primary building material is red ashlar, and the interiors feature glazed wall tiles and decorative wrought-ironwork, including art nouveau detailing on the staircases. Slate covers the roofs.

The main hospital block consists of three substantial blocks, arranged in a symmetrical, south-facing linear arrangement and linked by low wards with walkways on their flat roofs. The easternmost block (Wards 1, 2, and 3) was the first to be constructed, with a foundation stone laid in 1894 and the building opened in 1896. The central block (incorporating the administration offices and Ward 4) and the western block (Wards 5, 6, and 7) bear datestones of 1900 and 1907 respectively. The central block has a parapetted design and a tall, three-story south front with a basement. It includes an advanced centre with a Scots-style crow-stepped gable and angle bartizans; a modern first-floor ward extension sits to the right of the centre bay. Flanking wings are symmetrical and have advanced ends, while the steep French roofs of the centre may have originally been iron-crested. The western block mirrors the south front in composition, with timber framing in the gable heads. A polygonal conservatory/sun-room is located at the west end, and a large stair window is centrally placed on the north wall. The eastern block exhibits a similar design, although the south front is simplified at the wallhead and the roof is piended; it originally had iron-crested French roofs.

The linking ranges between the blocks have walkways that cantilever over the south front, with the area underneath the easternmost range glazed. They also feature decorative wrought-ironwork with art nouveau detailing.

A chapel, dated 1934, is located to the north of the main wing. Its front is a long flank wall executed in red ashlar, with a recessed entrance on the east gable and timber framing on the west gable.

On higher ground to the north of the main wing stands a former nurses’ home, also designed by Bryden. Originally a two-story, asymmetrical villa, it now forms the angle of a much larger, L-shaped block. Large harled wings have been added to the east and north. The nurses' home features a rusticated base and a conservatory.
