Description

The Walled Garden, Coldstone Manse, dates to 1783, with a porch added in 1826. It is a two-storey, three-bay, partially double-pile, M-gabled former manse. The house is constructed of harled granite, exhibiting regular fenestration.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, is three bays wide with regular fenestration. An advanced, shouldered, gabled porch is centrally placed, featuring a timber panelled door and a letterbox fanlight. Canted roof dormers with piended roofs are present. The north elevation has an advanced gabled bay to the centre left, and a cheese press built into the wall, flush with the return of the west elevation. A further M-gable is set to the right. The east side elevation displays a two-bay gable and a single-storey timber lean-to outhouse. The west side elevation is a four-bay M-gable.

The windows are four-pane, sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates with lead flashing, and features scrolled skewputts, coped skews, and gable stacks. The interior was not inspected in 2002.

Formerly known as Kirklands of Coldstone, the manse represents a typical late 18th century building style reflecting the emphasis on order and balance in Scottish architecture of the period. A steading, of single storey and 7 bays arranged in an E-plan, stands nearby—it is gabled with predominantly regular fenestration and numerous cartshed openings, built of squared granite courses, and covered with grey slates and lead flashing, with coped skews. A semicircular walled garden, featuring a coped rubble wall, is located to the rear of the steading. The cheese press built into the north wall and the walled garden and steading are particularly noteworthy features.
