Description

This late 18th century building, with an addition dating to 1845, is a single-story, L-shaped school, shop, and former shop premises, with gabled features. The exterior is constructed of harled squared granite courses, with granite mouldings around the openings.

The north (principal) elevation features a gabled bay on the left. In the center is a timber-boarded door with a letterbox fanlight, flanked by rectangular windows with plate glass glazing. To the right is a double bay, with a window on the left and a timber lean-to outhouse at the gable end returning to the outer right.

The east (side) elevation is five bays with irregular window placement, forming the side of the shop premises and the rear of the shopkeeper's cottage.

The south and west (rear courtyard) elevations show a gable end to the outer right which returns to the three-bay front elevation of the shopkeeper's cottage to the left. A door is centrally placed, flanked by windows, with swept-roof dormers above. The left return, which leads to the rear of the shop premises, is largely obscured by an abutting lean-to outhouse.

The windows are predominantly 4 and 12-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing. The building has coped skews and gable stacks.

The interior retains 1950s shop fittings, including timber-boarded walls, fitted shelving, and counters. The shopkeeper’s house, located to the rear of the shop, was not inspected in 2002.

The building was formerly RW McDonald's at Clashmarket, and was originally Migvie School, situated at the main crossroads at Migvie. It is a rare survivor from the 18th century, particularly given that most smaller buildings in the parish date from the late 19th century. The interior of the building is significant due to the survival of the 1950s grocer’s shop fittings. The statutory address is Migvie, Former Clashmarket.
