Description

This is a circa 1890 gate lodge and gate piers forming part of the Carnousie House estate. The lodge is a single-story building with an attic, designed in an L-shape. It is harled, with decorative Turriff sandstone ashlar at the corners and around the windows, which feature stone mullions.

The west elevation has a doorway on the left, above which is a fanlight and a wooden gabled porch supported by tree trunk columns. To the right is an advanced, gabled bay with a canted four-light window. A decorative piended roof sits above the window, with a moulded base course and cornice, and there is a small arrow slit window in the attic space.

The south elevation has a slightly projecting gabled bay on the right, containing a bipartite window at ground level and a single light above in the attic. A harled addition exists at the rear of the lodge. The front windows are casements with small diamond-patterned glazing, while those at the rear are plate glass sashes. The roof is covered with red, fish-scale tiles, accented by pierced clay ridge tiles, bracketed eaves, scalloped barge boards and finials to the gables. A corniced ashlar stack is centrally positioned.

The gate piers are made of Turriff sandstone ashlar, with clustered columns joined by a cornice and socle, suggesting that finials are missing. The original gates are also absent.

The architectural style is similar to that of the nearby West Cottage and Riverside Cottages, which are separately listed, and shares similarities with the Forglen Estate cottages in having porches with tree trunk columns. A rear extension was approved in 1991. The statutory address was revised in 2019.
