Description
This is an early 19th-century walled garden, approximately [size unspecified] in area, terraced on rising ground to the north of the River Deveron. The garden is enclosed by rubble walls, which are either brick-lined or harled, with Turriff sandstone quoins and coping. Pointed-arched gateways are located in the north and south corners of the east and west walls, each featuring stone overthrows (missing from the southwest gateway) and spear-headed cast-iron gates. The walls rise in a curved gable at the north elevation, supporting a lean-to structure that accommodates wood-framed greenhouses. A doorway in the terrace leads to an underground stair, likely providing access to a former potting shed.
Three pyramidal-roofed pavilions are situated at the southwest and southeast corners of the garden, with a third pavilion overgrown and set on the outside western wall. Each pavilion is topped with cast-iron finials. The garden was in use in 1990 and the site is shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of Banffshire from 1871-4.
