Description
East Cottage, dating from around 1880, is likely a remodelling of an earlier cottage. It is a single-story structure with an attic, situated beside the River Deveron. The exterior is harled (roughcast) with decorative dressings made of Turriff sandstone. A small, gabled porch with a door fronts the south side of the cottage, positioned on the eastern return of the central, slightly projecting bay. Ground-floor windows are located on either side of the porch. The rear of the cottage has three windows, and the attic has two gabled dormers that project through the roofline. A small window is found on the western gable at ground level, and a window divided into two lights by a stone mullion is located in the attic. The cottage has casement windows with small panes of glass. The roof is covered in grey slates, featuring bracketed eaves, exposed rafters, and a central chimney stack with four corniced, ashlar diamond flues.
The cottage was in poor condition in 1993. It was likely used as a fishing bothy, alongside West Cottage at Carnousie (listed separately). The buildings are shown on maps of the area, and may have been associated with the laundry for Carnousie House, which was located to the northeast. Historic maps from 1871 to 1874 depict the location of the cottage.
