Description

The Ropery in Seatown, Portsoy, is an early 19th century building that served as a ropery and includes adjoining houses arranged in a linear formation with long elevations to the north and south.

The ropery itself is a single-storey structure with a loft over a raised basement on the west side, situated on a slightly sloping site. It is an irregular nine-bay building approximately 100 feet long, constructed of harl pointed rubble with tooled rubble dressings. There are two surviving loft windows with wooden shutters at the southwest corner, while other loft windows are now blocked. A forestair leads to a loft door at the centre of the west gable, and there is a similar entrance in the east gable accessed by a long ramp. The building features end stacks, with a single later brick wallhead stack on both the north and south sides, and has a pantile roof that is in poor condition. The interior has been gutted.

Adjoining the ropery is a two-storey, three-bay house from the early 19th century, which is slightly set back to the north of the west gable of the ropery. This house is harled and has a central door with regular fenestration and end stacks, topped with a slate roof that is also in poor condition. The interior of this house has been gutted as well.

Additionally, there are back green cottages that date from the early to mid-19th century, located at the west gable of the house. This terrace consists of three single-storey and attic cottages, with two cottages having two bays and one cottage at the west end having three bays, all featuring a central door. The cottages are constructed of harl pointed rubble and have end and ridge stacks, with slate roofs. The interior condition of these cottages is poor.
