Description

The building is a hall church dating to the 1860s, constructed in a plain Early Gothic style. It occupies a prominent position on raised ground in the center of the village. The church is built of pink squared and stugged sandstone with finely dressed margins. It has a rectangular plan, six bays deep, with each bay divided by a wall buttress and lit at ground and gallery levels by single lancet windows with fixed metal window frames and clear glazing with margins.

The main entrance is centrally located on the front (southwest) gabled elevation, featuring a pointed arched doorway set within a shallow-projecting entrance bay. Above the doorway is a three-light gallery window, with each light a stilted lancet containing elongated, cusped plate tracery and simple coloured (blue and red) glass in quatrefoils, set beneath a continuous hood-mould. A small blind quatrefoil is positioned to the right of the three-light window, also with a pointed hood-mould. The gablehead is coped and stepped up midway, topped by a masonry cross finial.

A rectangular-plan, four-stage clock and bell tower is situated at the western (left-hand) angle, slightly projecting to the front (southwest) and side (northwest). It features a pair of flanking wall buttresses on each elevation, with clocks housed beneath steeply pitched masonry gablets at the center points of each elevation at the third stage. The tower then narrows to meet a square-plan upper belfry stage, with single segmental-pointed lancet windows with timber louvres. The tower is capped by a tall pyramid roof, slated with red tiled decorative banding, and a decorative iron weather-vane finial. The steeply pitched roof is slated, with a decorative polychrome band composed of red and green slates positioned at its midpoint. A small lean-to, single-storey kitchen extends from the rear (northeast).

The interior features a U-plan timber gallery supported by Egyptian style cast-iron columns with cluster shafts and palmette capitals. The gallery fronts are stencilled in black with decorative floral borders and a stylized fleur-de-lys frieze band. A clock is located at the center of the gallery front. The roof is timber-lined in a herring-bone effect, using two types of timber, one lighter and one darker in colour. Pendant roof posts are also decorated with stencilling. A contemporary pulpit is positioned at the northeast (liturgical east) end, featuring cusped panels. A communion table stands in front of the pulpit, with banded column supports and cusped spandrels. Simple coloured stained glass is found in a triangular, pointed window above the pulpit. The church is equipped with bench pews.

An enclosing wall extends to the street, along with cast-iron railings featuring pierced cusped spear heads. A late 19th-century cast-iron decorative lamp is situated in an arch above the entrance steps, although the glass of the lamp was replaced around the 1970s.
