Description
Udny Castle is a 16th-century keep, possibly completed in the early 17th century. It is a tall, harled structure with four storeys and an attic, measuring approximately 35 feet by 43 feet. The keep features curved angles and a slightly intaken second floor, along with richly detailed angle turrets, although the corbelling of the northeast turret is simpler than the others. The battlement walk on the south side is also richly corbelled.
The castle was deserted around 1775, with some repairs made in 1801. It was incorporated into a large baronial mansion designed by H.M. Wardrop (Wardrop and Anderson) between 1874 and 1875. The Wardrop additions were later demolished, and the tower was restored by G. Bennett Mitchell (John Lamb) from 1964 to 1967. The interior now mainly reflects these later dates, but retains key features from the original structure, including a plain three-chamber vaulted ground floor and a vaulted first floor, as well as complex wall stairs and wall chambers. The hall vault showcases good plaster work by Wardrop.
