Farmhouse (Former Laundry), Pitmedden Garden And Estate

The stable at Pitmedden Garden and Estate dates from probably the earlier to mid 19th century and consists of a group of four main ancillary structures associated with Pitmedden Garden and Pitmedden House, which now function as a museum complex. The site includes a two-storey, three-bay former estate laundry, now converted into a farmhouse; a single-storey stable range with a hayloft, which adjoins a garage conversion that connects to Pitmedden House; an open shed; and a U-plan steading with a bothy located to the north of the beech walk. The buildings are constructed of squared rubble, coursed and snecked, featuring eaves courses, ashlar margins, and stop-chamfered arrises on the stable and farmhouse. The steading has a voussoired, segmental cart arch, and the open shed is supported by cast iron columns with decorative capitals. The roofs are slated and have ashlar-coped skews.

The farmhouse, originally the laundry, has a symmetrical entrance elevation facing south with widely spaced bays. It features replacement timber sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, where the first-floor windows are slightly smaller than those on the ground floor.

Inside, the museum display is arranged as a farmhouse, showcasing boarded timber dadoes on the ground floor and fully boarded bedrooms on the first floor. There are timber fire surrounds with cast iron horseshoe grates, and a large stone fireplace with a cast iron range in the kitchen.

The stable has a symmetrical entrance elevation facing east, with a central door flanked by narrow lights featuring leaded diamond pattern glazing. The rear elevation has a small opening to the right that includes a glazed panel over a timber hopper, along with a row of five tiny openings near the eaves.

The interior of the stable retains cobbled setts, timber loose boxes, and ironwork hay baskets on the ground floor.

The open shed is a simple half-gabled structure with stonework on the end walls, slatted timber at the rear, and an open eastern front supported by three cast iron columns.

The steading and bothy form a simple U-plan layout, with a later range added to the north. The original steading features a broad gabled range running east-west, with a cart arch to the west and slightly lower gabled projections to the south.
