Description

Auchmacoy is a large house designed in 1831 by William Burn for James Buchan. It is built in the Scots Elizabethan style and is constructed of harled walls with granite dressings, featuring prominent shafted chimneys. The south front is symmetrical, with a projecting central bay featuring a gable and a bay window. It has two storeys with mullioned windows of three lights each side, topped with smaller gables. The east front, which serves as the main entrance, is asymmetrical, incorporating a south bay window, a porch with a Tudor doorpiece and shaped gable, a circular conical roofed tower, and a lower north wing. A private family wing extends from the northeast.

The interior has a simple neo-Greek style, with some noteworthy chimney pieces, some of which may have been salvaged from a previous house.

A Tudor style mausoleum was constructed within the grounds in 1866 for Thomas Buchan. It is built of stugged ashlar with a diagonally buttressed, gabled porch on the west flank.

Historical sources suggest the construction may have been contracted by John Smith, father of William Smith, and records show that sources such as the Buchan Field Club and Pratt’s Buchan discuss the building.
