Description

St John's Episcopal Church, located on Seafield Terrace in Portsoy, was designed by architect James Ross and completed in 1840. This simple rectangular church is oriented east to west, featuring slightly advanced north and south gables that suggest a shallow cruciform plan. The building showcases Gothic detailing, constructed from dark coursed rubble with contrasting tooled sandstone dressings, and the north elevation is harl-pointed.

The eastern entrance gable has a shallow advanced center bay that includes a pointed-headed doorway and a window above it. The outer bays feature similar narrow lancet windows. At the center, there is a square bellcote that houses a single bell, topped by a facetted spire with a cross finial. The long south elevation consists of three bays, with Y-tracery windows in the outer bays and a larger center gable window featuring three-light geometric tracery. The eastern elevation has a three-light window that lights the chancel, while the center of the long north elevation has a blind pointed-headed window. All windows, except for those in the south gable, have simple Y-tracery and leaded lattice-pane glazing. Small pinnacles adorn the north, south, and east apices, and the church is topped with slate roofs.

Inside, the church has a simple and lofty interior with shallow vaulting that meets at the crossing. It contains plain late 19th-century pews, a circa 1900 tub font on a low cluster-column base, and a chancel mural memorial from 1833 in the style of William Robertson of Elgin. The center south window features late 19th-century stained glass.
