Description

North Lodge, dating to circa 1830, is a single-story L-shaped lodge. It is constructed of random rubble, with ashlar dressings and a bracketted coping to the main openings.

The west elevation features a doorway within a gabled porch situated in the re-entrant angle. The door itself is panelled, with a letterbox fanlight above. A window sits to the right of the porch. An advanced gable extends to the left, containing a window, with a blind arrow-slit positioned above it. The south gable mirrors this design. The windows are casement style and have lying-pane glazing. The roof is covered in purple slates, with ashlar coped skews which are chamfered and run horizontally over the skewputts. The lodge has a group of three ashlar diamond stacks.

The gates and quadrant walls are also of historical importance. The gatepiers are made of cast iron and topped with polygonal caps. The gates feature cast-iron fleur-de-lys railings. These are set within ashlar coped rubble quadrant and boundary walls.

The lodge is comparable in design to the south lodge in Forgue Parish, Gordon District, and shares a similar derelict state. Haddo House, located to the south, was possibly designed by Archibald Simpson around 1825, with subsequent work potentially undertaken by John Smith. The lodge is currently uninhabited. Historic maps from 1871-4 depict the site.
