Description
Mains of Pittendrum House, dated 1734, features later 19th century enlargements of windows and internal remodelling. This tall, plain, narrow house has two storeys and an attic, with three bays and single-storey attic wings that project at the main west front, forming a U-plan court and set back from the rear east elevation. The house is constructed of harl pointed rubble, with harled wings and tooled and polished ashlar dressings and margins.
The central entrance has a lugged and moulded doorpiece beneath a segmental-headed pediment, which displays a coat of arms and the date in the tympanum, flanked by carved thistle on the left and rose on the right. The entrance features a later 19th century double-leaf panelled door. The regular fenestration includes three windows that break the wallhead under swept dormers; the rear east elevation has similar fenestration with a blocked central door and single blocked ground and first-floor windows in the north and south gables.
Both wings have two-bay north and south elevations, with the north wing featuring two small attic windows below the wallhead and a later 19th century swept dormer on the east side. The south wing attic is only lit by a gable window in the west front. The house has 4-pane glazing throughout, flat skews, shaped skewputts, and tall coped end stacks with 18th century copes, all covered by steeply pitched slate roofs at the wings.
The interior was remodelled in the later 19th century and includes a plain steep staircase with a wooden balustrade and handrail, later 19th century panelled doors, and window shutters. There are no chimneypieces of merit.
