Description

Lazenby Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed of ashlar and rubblestone, with ashlar dressings and graduated stone slate roofs. The main front has five bays, with advanced wings on either side, each two bays wide and three bays deep. The south front has six bays. The east front features a central six-panel door flanked by three Doric demi-shafts set on a panelled plinth, with a pulvinated frieze and dentilled cornice overhead. Double-chamfered mullion-and-transom windows are divided by short Doric pilasters below a continuous cornice. The first-floor windows are similar, except for those in the left-hand bay and to the right of the central bay, which have sash windows with glazing bars. The central bay is flanked by three Ionic demi-shafts on panelled plinths with dosserets above, and windows are divided by short Ionic pilasters, also with dosserets. A twin-flued stack is located to the right. The left-hand wing has two double-chamfered mullion-and-transom windows to both the ground and first floors, with a chamfered band to the first floor. A similar window is in the gable, incorporating shaped kneelers and chamfered coping. The right-hand wing has similar openings but is blind, also featuring similar openings to each floor on its inner return. It has pantile roofing with shaped kneelers and chamfered coping. The south front has a central three-bay break forward, with a 20th-century glazed door in a moulded stone architrave with a frieze, cornice, and pediment. This is flanked by four-pane sashes, with similar windows to the right and left, all set in earlier chamfered openings. A board door is located to the left bay. A chamfered first-floor band runs across the front; the left-hand bay has a blind chamfered 3-light mullion-and-transom window, and to its right a small square blind chamfered opening. To its right and in the right-hand bay are four-pane sashes, both in earlier openings. Central outer bays are dominated by a chamfered square mullioned window, and centrally a chamfered square casement. The rear elevation is constructed of ashlar, rubblestone, and brick, with some blind mullioned windows, and features a plain board door in a chamfered surround. An outshut is located at the corner where the south wing meets the main wing. Internally, there are several good plaster ceilings, one dated 1680. The main room, a hall of five bays on the east front, has a highly decorated ceiling and beams, featuring plaster floral and strapwork motifs, with angels in the centre of some panels. A large chimney-piece has an ovolo-moulded architrave, flanking thin columns supporting a frieze with a large broken segmental pediment and dentilled cornice. The frieze is decorated with angels, a grape and vine motif, and the pediment has the same motifs as the ceiling.
