Description
Meldrum House is a 17th and 18th century building that was reconstructed by Archibald Simpson around 1836-39. It is designed as a symmetrical neo-Jacobean mansion with three storeys, featuring two-storey advance pavilions and a central porch on the southwest side. The house underwent further reconstruction from 1934 to 1937 by W.L. Duncan to meet the needs of Lady Doris Duff. During this work, the top storey of the main block was removed, Simpson's balanced southeast pavilion and porch were demolished, and the main staircase was taken out. A new northwest entrance and a neo-Georgian main staircase were added to the entrance hall. The interior retains some fine woodwork by Simpson and several earlier chimneypieces, but it has been significantly altered, with the main interest now focused on the west pavilion. This pavilion has a datestone dated 1625, although it is not in its original position. The roof was remodeled, and the angle turrets were raised by Simpson. Notably, there is a very fine balustraded external stair leading to the first floor, and the ground floor features a vaulted ceiling. The building is constructed from rubble with cherry cocking.
