Description
The House of Daviot Hospital was built in 1723 for John Elphinstone. It underwent alterations in 1889 by Matthews & Mackenzie when it became a Nurses' Home, and again in 1934 by G. Bennet Mitchell, who added a two-storey and attic wing to the rear. The original structure is a three-storey, five-window rectangle, harled with chamfered openings, skewputts, and large chimneys featuring deep moulded copes at the gables. The doorpiece, glazing, window sills, and dormers have been modernized. The interior has been significantly altered and renewed, with a central staircase at the rear that has a semi-circular plan and a demi-lune well. The staircase is made of stone on the first floor and wood above, and it is illuminated by a single large window with a chamfer.
