Description
Pitcaple Castle is a late 15th-century tower house that was originally designed with an open parapet. It was later reconstructed as a Z-plan house featuring round angle towers and a southeast angle turret in the early 17th century. The building has four storeys along with five-storey towers, and the entrance is located in the southwest stair tower, which is harled and has crow-stepped gables.
In 1830, a two-storey southwest addition was made, which included a new entrance porch and a turret at the angle, designed by William Burn for Hugh Lumsden. During this time, the angle turret was raised, and some original ground floor openings were blocked, although these have recently been reopened. Further additions and a service court were made, and in 1870, red granite Corinthian columns were added to the hall at the stair by Duncan MacMillan.
