Description
Insch Station, built around 1860 and restored in 1996, is a single-storey, four-bay railway station office designed in a U-plan with a gabled entrance. It features a rectangular waiting room on the opposite platform and an ironwork footbridge. The building is constructed from large squared rubble blocks with Aberdeen bonding, whitewashed harl or render, and has ashlar margins and quoin strips. The windows have stone transoms and mullions.
On the northeast elevation, there is a recessed central bay flanked by advanced gables; the left gable has two windows on its return and two small windows in the recessed bay at the outer left. The northwest elevation features a slightly advanced gable with two windows to the right of the centre and two more to the left. The southeast elevation has a single gabled bay with a small window in the finialled gablehead.
The windows have a three-pane glazing pattern and are made of timber. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with a full complement of polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with flat-topped moulded skewputts. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.
Inside, the station features plain cornicing, boarded timber dadoes, and a plain cast-iron register grate with a timber surround. The waiting room on the south platform is rectangular with a sloping roof and is weatherboarded. Its northeast elevation has a central two-leaf panelled timber door with a deep fanlight (which is blocked) and flanking bipartite windows with decorative astragals.
The footbridge is constructed of ironwork, possibly using old rails, and features a dog-leg design with horizontal rails.
