Description

The Walled Garden at Sandford Lodge is a large garden covering about half a hectare, built from large blocks of coursed and snecked local granite rubble. It was constructed around 1800, contemporary with Sandford Lodge, which is located immediately to the south. The garden is rectangular in shape, featuring an elliptically curved east wall that includes a roofless structure with a corner fireplace. There is also a small bowed outshot in the north wall, and the walls are topped with coping stones. The garden has three pedestrian openings, with the one closest to the house featuring ashlar gatepiers topped with polished ashlar pyramidal capstones.

Adjacent to the west wall is a multi-phase, L-plan farm steading range that includes a small single-storey cottage. These farm buildings are of standard design and construction but have been significantly altered and are excluded from the listing.

The earliest known reference to the walled garden dates back to 1833, although it was likely built around the same time as the Lodge. An advertisement from that year mentioned the gardens of the mansion-house on the south side of Sandford Bay being in full bearing. The layout of both the house and the walled garden is depicted in detail on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1868, and it has remained largely unchanged since then. The house and garden have not been in use since 2006, and there have been no significant changes to the walled garden since that time.
