Description
The Royal Arch in Fettercairn is a triumphal arch of 1864-5, designed by John Milne of St Andrews and constructed in Aldbar stone ashlar. It was built as a memorial to the Prince Consort and to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in September 1861, and the design was chosen through a competition assessed by Queen Victoria.
The arch is approximately 60 feet high and comprises round arches between two buttressed, octagonal towers topped with short, gableted spirelets and wrought-iron finials. A crenellated parapet runs along the top of the arch, with a distinctive curvilinear gablet feature positioned centrally. Cameron's 'Fettercairn' provides additional details.
