Maud Hospital, Bank Road, Maud

Maud Hospital, located on Bank Road in Maud, was designed in 1866 by Alexander Ellis of Aberdeen following an architectural competition. It opened on January 26, 1869, as the Buchan Combination Poor House, with a datestone from 1867.

The main block of the hospital is two storeys high and features a long, symmetrical front made of coursed and squared whinstone, accented with contrasting grey granite ashlar dressings. The original glazing consists mostly of 16-pane sash and case windows with thick central astragals, and the building has gabled slate roofs. The centre range is set cross-ways and has a taller roof topped with a large axial ventilator and a spirelet. The south front has a 3-bay gable that is advanced and contains a granite centerpiece, a doorway at ground level, an arcaded 3-light window on the first floor, and an attic oculus with cusped tracery, supported by angle buttresses. The wings, which are likely ward blocks, have flat fronts and feature gablets at the centre and ends, with staircases lit from the rear. There are also pyramid-roofed square angle pavilions. At either end, there are modern single-bay additions designed in a sympathetic style. To the rear are associated lower service ranges and outbuildings, linked at the centre, along with a pair of walled garden areas separated by a driveway.

The gatehouse at the roadside is built from similar materials and is presumably part of the original design. It is a single-storey structure with a symmetrical north front facing the driveway, featuring a centre-doored 3-bay inner range that connects to shallow-advanced gables of the outer ranges. The flanks are plain, with end stacks, and there are square gatepiers with iron-railed quadrants.
