Smoke House, John Ross Junior, 82-84 Sinclair Road, Torry

The Smoke House, located at 82-84 Sinclair Road in Torry, is a traditional red brick smoke house probably built in the earlier to mid 20th century. It is the only remaining smoke house in Torry, situated near the dockside in the heart of the fish processing area on the south side of the River Dee. As of 2006, it is the only premises still using the traditional method of smoking fish over fire mounds in the entire Aberdeen fish curing industry.

The structure features a tall brick kiln that projects above later office and fish processing units. The base of the kiln has been encased in breeze block, along with a metal and polystyrene foam sandwich, to meet strict health and safety regulations. The kiln has gable ends on the north and south sides, with longer east and west elevations topped by a steeply-pitched corrugated roof. This roof rises to a full-width, slate-roofed, four-part timber-louvered ventilator with brick gablet ends.

Inside, the entrance to the kiln is through a low fire door at the base, which is enclosed by later units. The kiln floor is made of long firebricks, with tenters above.
