Description

26 John Street is a small, three-storey warehouse built in the late 19th century, featuring an attic and basement. The building has a striking ornate Dutch gable on its John Street elevation. The front is constructed of grey stugged granite ashlar, while the other sides are made of squared and coursed rubble.

On the principal southeast elevation, there is a moulded cill course at the ground floor and an eaves course. The central bay has a two-leaf metal door with a tripartite, segmental-arched fanlight above it. The window bays are recessed with segmental-arched openings and moulded cills that extend up to the attic level. The ornate Dutch gable includes segmental-arched hoodmoulds over the attic openings and a central oculus window with a moulded surround at the gable apex. The gable features coped skews and a cast-iron finial at the top. The northeast elevation has irregular fenestration and a metal roller-shutter door on the far right.

The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a tall narrow wallhead stack at the east corner, along with a broad gable stack at the rear. Clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Inside, as observed in 2006, there are cast-iron columns with boxed-in flanges and capitals, along with an early 20th-century lift that services all floors.
