Description

46 Charlotte Street, including the arched gateway, is a former college building dating from 1887. It is a compact, two-storey structure with an attic, featuring seven bays and a central gable adorned with simple Gothic decoration. The building is constructed from grey granite ashlar, with base, string, and blocking courses. It has bipartite windows with chamfered reveals. The three-bay centre gable includes simple, pinnacled buttresses and an apex pinnacle, along with a round-arched opening at the attic level. Similar pinnacles are found over the outer angle buttress strips. At the top, there is an elaborate, crocketted and leaded central ridge fleche with a finial and weathervane.

To the left, there is an archway with a pointed arch, featuring a crenelated and coped parapet and a small sandstone statuette of John Knox at the center. The entrance is marked by finely wrought double leaf iron gates. The northern elevation has an irregular massing due to alterations, including a segmental-arch doorway at the re-entrant angle and arcaded ground floor openings to the left.

The building predominantly features non-traditional tilt and turn glazing, grey slate roofing, chamfered end stacks, ashlar skews, and clay cans. It also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
