Description
Old Farm House and Steading in Caskieben likely dates from the early to mid-19th century, with an early 19th-century refronting. The house is two stories tall and has three bays, with a rear wing that is part of an earlier structure. It is built of coursed square rubble with harled gables. Some 12-pane glazing remains at the rear, while the central door and the window above have been altered. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, featuring broad end stacks.
The steading is also from the early 19th century and is designed in the style of Archibald Simpson. It has an E-plan layout, consisting of parts that are single and two stories high. The left range is made of pinned rubble, while the rest is primarily granite ashlar. The central block is two stories tall and includes three cart arches with a loft above. The gable end features broad band courses and a consoled dummy window, along with deep eaves that mimic a pediment.
To the right, there is a cattle court with square gate piers. The right range contains a cottage and remnants of a water mill, though this part is now in ruins. The roofs throughout the property are covered with slate.
