5 Ballintemple Road, Killevy, Newry, Co Armagh, BT35 8LQ

Two-storey, two-bay vernacular house on the east side of Ballintemple Road, Killevy, aligned east-west with its gable facing the road. An evolved vernacular building without special architectural or historic interest.

The house has a pitched natural slate roof with a red machine-brick chimney set to the internal party wall between the main house and the attached right gable outbuilding. There is a slightly advanced eaves course with timber eaves board and no rainwater goods. The walls are lime-rendered rubble stone.

The principal elevation faces south. A projecting porch with a door opening to the front is positioned at the right-end of the right bay, with blank cheeks to left and right. Each bay contains windows on both floors. The ground floor windows retain the remains of 6/3 sliding sashes with exposed boxes and granite cills, while the first floor windows contain the remains of 2/2 sashes.

The right gable is completely abutted by a similarly detailed two-storey outbuilding. Its south elevation has a tongue-and-groove sheeted door at the right-end and a boarded, cill-less window at centre. The first floor has two window openings, with that to the left set slightly left of the ground floor window below. A tongue-and-groove sheeted loading door on the right gable is accessed by external steps.

The rear elevation of the house contains a 2/2 sliding sash window to the first floor centre of the left bay. The rear of the outbuilding has two ground floor windows: a top-hung timber casement to the left and a 2/2 sliding sash to the right. The left gable is blank.

The house is enclosed to the road by a rubble stone wall with field stone copings. A modern metal gate leads into a small front garden. Opposite the house stands a single-storey four-bay outbuilding with pitched natural slate roof and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. Its north elevation has four openings: from left to right, a tongue-and-groove sheeted door, a door opening, a 3 by 1 metal-framed window, and a large door opening with the remains of tongue-and-groove sheeted doors at the extreme right. The left gable has a tongue-and-groove sheeted loading door accessing the loft of the left bay. The rear elevation has door openings to all but the right bay. The right gable is blank and faces the road.

A building with the ground plan of the present house first appears on the 1861 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. An outbuilding was added in 1873 and the structure was raised to its present two-storey form in 1898. The first survey photograph shows the building with whitewashed walls and sash windows (6/3 to ground floor, 2/2 to first floor), a whitewashed boundary wall to the road with circular piers supporting a pair of wrought-iron gates, and an outbuilding containing two tongue-and-groove sheeted doors to the ground floor and two 1/1 sliding sash windows to the first floor.
