Description
This is a three-storey terrace house dating to circa 1820, one of a block of five originally identical dwellings. Due to the sloping ground level, the houses appear as two-storey structures from the front. The house sits centrally within the block and is set on a slight angle. It is located on the north-western side of Saul Street, to the north-east of Downpatrick town centre, with its front facade facing south-east.
The front facade is finished with lined render and painted. A modern, partially glazed door with an almost semicircular fanlight featuring spoke tracery is located on the ground floor to the left. To the right of the door is a sash window with six-over-six panes. Similar sash windows are present on the first floor. At the rear, a modern lean-to extension is situated on the left at ground ('basement') level, connecting to a two-storey, flat-roofed extension on the right. Both rear extensions have modern windows, with patio doors to the single-storey section. There are sash windows on the first and second floors of the main house, and another set at stair half-landing level to the right. The rear facade of the main house is finished with unpainted rough cast. The gabled roof is slated and incorporates a concrete brick chimney stack, and features a Velux window. The rainwater goods are a mix of cast iron and PVC.
The short terrace to which the house belongs is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 and is likely to date from circa 1820. Local tradition associates the name 'Betsy's Terrace' with Betsy Gray, a figure from the 1798 Rising, although the veracity of this connection and any potential link to this area of Saul Street remain unconfirmed. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, 1859, 1901, and 1920 held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) provide further context. The building exhibits a pleasing style and proportion, although later alterations have somewhat diminished its original character. It contributes to the group value of the surrounding area.
