Description

This is a three-storey terrace house dating to c.1820, one of a block of five originally identical dwellings. Due to a steep ground level, the front of the house appears as two storeys. The property is located on the north-west side of Saul Street, to the north-east of Downpatrick town centre, and sits on a slight angle. It is positioned at the north-east end of the terrace, and the front façade faces south-east.

The front façade is finished in dry-dash rendering. A modern, partly glazed door with an almost semicircular fanlight, featuring original ‘spider web’ iron tracery, is located to the left on the ground floor. To the right of the door is a window, and similar windows are present on the first floor, all with modern frames. The north-east gable is cement rendered.

At the rear, there is a large, modern, flat-roofed extension with a two-storey section to the left. Windows are situated on the first and second floors, both having modern frames. The rear elevation is rendered with dry-dash finish to parts of the extension. The roof is covered with artificial 'slate' and features a concrete brick chimney stack. A Velux window is present at the rear. The rainwater goods are a mix of cast iron and PVC. A low, rendered wall runs along the front.

The short terrace to which this house belongs is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834. Local tradition suggests the name ‘Betsy’s Terrace’ may refer to Betsy Gray, a figure associated with the 1798 Rising. The connection between Betsy Gray and the terrace, and whether the terrace should therefore date to the late 18th century rather than the early 19th, is unconfirmed.

The architectural interest of the house lies in its style and proportions. Alterations, particularly the replacement windows and modern extension, detract from the original appearance. The group value of the terrace is also recognised.
