Description

This is a three-storey terrace house dating to circa 1820, one of a block of five originally identical dwellings. Due to a significant change in ground level, the front of the house appears as two storeys. The house is situated on the north-west side of Saul Street, to the north-east of Downpatrick town centre, and faces south-east. It is located close to the south-west end of the terrace.

The front façade is finished with lined render and is painted. A timber-sheeted door with an almost semicircular fanlight featuring spoke tracery is on the left side of the ground floor, alongside a six-over-six pane sash window. Two similar sash windows are positioned on the first floor. A sash window, matching the front, is on the rear façade at ground level, alongside a partly glazed door. Further windows of similar design are present on the two upper floors, with another window positioned at stair half-landing level to the right. The rear façade is covered with unpainted lined render. The roof is slated, with a concrete brick chimney stack. A Velux window is also present at the rear. The windows are Georgian paned sash frames. Cast iron and PVC rainwater goods are visible. A low-rendered wall runs along the front.

The terrace, which includes this house, is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, supporting a construction date of circa 1820. Local tradition links the name 'Betsy’s Terrace' to Betsy Gray, a figure associated with the 1798 Rising, although the veracity of this connection and any actual link to this part of Saul Street remain unconfirmed. Architectural features include its style and proportions. Alterations have, however, somewhat diminished the building’s original character. The house contributes to the group value of the surrounding area.
