Description
73 Scotch Street is a relatively small two-storey late Victorian terrace house, dating from around 1880, situated on the south side of Scotch Street to the east of Downpatrick town centre. The building presents a plain appearance with a rendered front façade and simple mouldings to its window openings.
The asymmetrical north-facing front façade is organised as follows. On the ground floor to the right stands a timber-panelled door with frieze, cornice and pointed blocking course. To the left is a large elliptical arch-headed window with moulded surround, now fitted with a PVC frame of modern design, and protected by a modern wrought-iron guard rail at sill level. The first floor contains two flat arch window openings, each with modern PVC frames, moulded surrounds, and plain dripstone and label stops. The sills of these windows are integrated into a projecting string course. The lower section of the façade is rusticated while the upper area is plainly plastered.
Above the adjoining neighbour to the east, a small blank section of the upper gable is visible. To the west, a similar gable area is blank except for one small attic window. A tall brick chimney stack, which belongs to the adjoining property at No. 71, rises to the centre of the gable.
The rear façade contains a tall window opening with modern frame on the ground floor right side, with a matching window directly above at first floor level. To the left is a large two-storey gabled return, lower than the main house, to which is attached a small lean-to return with a plain door to its east face. The gable of the main return has a tall window to its right side. On the east face of the return, the ground floor has a large modern window to the left and a plain door to the right, with the upper section blank. The rear façade and return are rendered and show traces of paint. A rendered chimney stack stands to the east.
The roof is covered with concrete pantiles. Most window frames throughout the building are modern replacements.
According to the current owner, the house was built for an official of the then Down District Lunatic Asylum, now Downshire Hospital.
