Description

60 Irish Street is a relatively plain two-storey terrace building situated on the east side of Irish Street in Downpatrick, with its front façade facing west. Originally built as a house around 1800–1820, it was converted to office use in the 1990s, during which the façade was greatly altered.

The front façade is asymmetrical and rendered with paint finish. To the right is a recently inserted recessed shop front featuring a large modern window, glazed door, and period-style surround. To the left are two sash windows with 2/2 panes; the second window from the left is a recent insertion. The first floor has three unevenly spaced windows of similar style to the ground floor left. The rear façade has a sheeted door with a modern-framed window to its left at ground floor level. To the right of this door extends a large, modern, single-storey flat-roofed return. The first floor rear façade of the main building has two windows with modern frames. Both rear façade and extension are finished as the front. The gabled roof has an artificial covering with a rendered chimney stack to the north. Two Velux windows are positioned to the rear. Metal rainwater goods are present throughout.

The property is shown occupied on the 1708 town plan of Downpatrick and on all subsequent plans. Like much of Irish Street, this building probably dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, around 1800–1820; its façade arrangement before the 1990s changes supported this dating. The building is likely the property indicated on the 1838 valuation plan, when it was occupied by Michael Martin. The significant alterations of the 1990s replaced the almost centrally positioned house doorway and adjacent window with the present shop front, inserted a new window to the left, and added the large return extension.
