Description
This is a small, triangular granite milestone, likely dating from around 1780 to 1800. It is a "presentment type" milestone, referring to those erected under the direction of Grand Juries. The milestone is situated next to the Down Civic Arts Centre, at the corner of Irish Street and Scotch Street. It is made of granite and is well worn; however, markings on the southwest face are still visible, indicating "Castlewellan 9" (miles) and "Newry [?24]", as well as an Ordnance Survey benchmark. The milestone possesses industrial archaeological interest and lies within a conservation area.
