Description
This is a three-storey terrace house dating from approximately 1820, and is one of a block of five originally identical dwellings. Due to the sloping ground level, the front of the house appears as two storeys. The house is situated close to the northeast end of the block, on the northwest side of Saul Street, to the northeast of Downpatrick town centre. The front facade faces southeast.
The front of the house is finished with lined render and painted. A modern, partly glazed door with an almost semicircular fanlight containing a 'spoke' tracery design is on the left side of the ground floor. To the right of the door is a sash window with 6-over-6 Georgian panes. Two similar windows are on the first floor. A window is also present on the first floor rear elevation, with another on the second floor, both with modern multi-pane frames. To the right is a similar window set at stair half-landing level. The rear facade of the main house is covered in unpainted rough cast. The gabled roof is slated and features a concrete brick chimney stack and a Velux window to the rear. The windows are a mix of cast iron and PVC frames. A low rendered wall runs along the front. A modern, single-storey lean-to extension is located at ground level on the left side of the rear elevation.
The short terrace, shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834, likely dates from around 1820. Locally, the terrace is known as ‘Betsy’s Terrace’, a name said to refer to Betsy Gray, associated with the 1798 Rising. The connection between Betsy Gray and the terrace, if any, is unknown.
The terrace is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, 1859, 1901, and 1920, held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Historical references suggest a possible link to Betsy Gray, though this remains unconfirmed. The house exhibits a pleasing style and proportion. Modern alterations detract somewhat from the building's original appearance, but it contributes to the group value of the terrace.
