Description
This is a three-storey commercial property located on Kildare Street in Newry, facing the Newry River. Constructed between 1820 and 1839, it retains some interesting original shopfront features.
The building is rendered, with a pitched, artificial slated roof featuring render chimneys to each gable, one of which is partially collapsed and both coped. The façade has lined render to the upper floors and banded rustication to the ground floor. A shopfront occupies the ground floor, with a separate door leading to the upper floors on its right side. Three banded, rusticated piers support a rendered fascia with a dentilled cornice. A projecting roller shutter and a plastic sign are inserted into the shopfront beneath the fascia. The shopfront itself features a modern timber door flanked by two free-standing cast iron columns with decorative heads. Rendered stall risers with panelled, splayed side cheeks frame the central recessed doorway between the columns. Three-paned, modern timber windows are located on either side of the door. A modern timber door with a plain transom provides access to the upper floors. The three upper floors each feature three equally spaced, 1/1 sliding sash windows with horns. The first-floor windows rest on the cornice of the shopfront fascia and share a continuous head moulding featuring scrolls and Baroque clam shells and arabesques. The second-floor windows rest on a moulded cill course with two brackets below each, and each has a moulded architrave with decorative projecting keyblocks.
The property was shown on an 1835 Ordnance Survey map and was originally Robert Glenny’s house and stores. In 1838, the building was valued at £40, and Glenny remained the owner in 1863, when it was described as a three-storey building used as stores. The stucco work on the façade appears to have been added in the later 19th century, indicating a refurbishment. The building is located within a conservation area.
