24 Upper Water Street, (formerly 24 Abbey Way), Newry, Co Down, BT34 1DJ

This is a three-storey building located on the west side of Upper Water Street, originally known as Abbey Way, in Newry. The building’s construction is likely to date between 1780 and 1799, and it appears on an Ordnance Survey town map from 1835.

The building has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate, with a red brick chimney on the right gable. The eaves project and incorporate half-round gutters. The facade is constructed from coursed and squared granite rubble, heavily repointed with cement. A modern shop front with a boxed roller shutter occupies the ground floor, and to the right is a six-panel timber door with a plain transom, leading to the rear yard. A painted timber fascia, supported by timber pilasters, is positioned between the ground and first floors. Each upper floor contains two openings, each with a 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window. These windows have granite cills and three-piece voussoired heads; the second-floor windows have horns and are slightly reduced in height. The left and right gables are abutted by adjoining buildings. The rear elevation is entirely hidden by a large cement-rendered return, featuring modern windows and doors.

The building was originally used as a house and is currently used as an office. It is privately owned.
