Description

Located on the upstream side of the Armaghdown Bridge, opposite main entrance to Town Hall. This cast-iron canon measures 2.80m in length overall and tapers to a bell-mouth nozzle of c.150mm bore. Winged bird insignia cast in middle of top surface. Lugs on sides of barrel enables it to be pivot mounted on a wrought-iron cradle. Both lugs are engraved with various number markings and the right one has a date possibly 1799? The canon is also marked ‘No.27’. This has two wheels at front and towing bracket at back. Rear end of canon rests on a short cast-iron post secured to back end of cradle.
