Description

This is a three-storey building with an attic, situated on the corner of Hill Street and Kildare Street in Newry. It was likely constructed between 1820 and 1839 and is a significant feature within the local conservation area. The building appears to have been used as a house from its construction until the mid-19th century, when it became a shop. It is currently a bank.

The building has a canted corner and a small gable dormer rising from the wallhead at the corner. The roof is pitched with natural slate, with a hipped section facing Kildare Street and a gabled section facing Hill Street. It features overhanging eaves with decorative rafter tails, terracotta ridges, and a terracotta finial on the corner. A cast iron skylight is visible on the front pitch to Hill Street, and tile skews are present on the gable to Hill Street. Two cast iron skylights are on the rear pitch. The walls of both main elevations are lined with render and include a moulded cill course at the first floor level, which is both broader and continues as a raised, painted stringcourse along both facades, extending to the dormer window at attic level.

A modern shopfront wraps around the corner of the building at ground floor level, comprised of boxed pilasters, a projecting timber fascia with roller shutters, and signage. The main entrance is located on the canted corner and is a modern shop door, flanked by pilasters. There are seven windows on each of the upper floors, with two facing Kildare Street, one on the canted corner, and four facing Hill Street. All windows are 1/1 sliding sash, with stop-chamfered render reveals. An illuminated box sign is attached to the wall at first floor level on the canted corner.

The gable facing Kildare Street is abutted by a lower building, and the wall above is skewed, rendered, and plain. Similarly, the gable facing Hill Street is abutted by a lower building with a painted plain render wall above. The rear elevation was not inspected. The building was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and valued at £17 in 1838. In 1863, it was described as three storeys high with a basement.
