Description

This vernacular house, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839, is situated on a hillside and accessed via a lane on the southwest side of Gransha Road. It is a single-story, three-bay building shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1833, and evidence suggests it predates that map. The house retains local interest and possesses notable interior features that contribute to its group value.

The construction incorporates a pitched roof covered in natural slate, punctuated by three coped red brick chimneys – one at each gable and a central one between the left and central bays. Render has been removed from the chimneys. A brick eaves course carries half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are of dashed random rubble, with render lost in places. The principal, east-facing elevation features a shallow, monopitched porch with a natural slate roof, built of concrete blocks and containing an unpainted “t+g” sheeted door accessed by two concrete steps. A window is situated to the left of the porch. Each of the left and right bays contain two windows, all being 2/2 exposed box sliding sash windows with horns and concrete sills. The left gable is blank and adjoins a lower, narrower single-story outbuilding, constructed of rubble stone with a pitched corrugated metal roof to the first stage and a higher pitched natural slate roof to the second. The rear elevation has a small window in each bay. The right gable is blank and features large foundation boulders exposed due to ground erosion. A small, overgrown yard is located to the front, and a mature garden with trees lies to the rear. A single-story, single-bay rubble stone outbuilding of no particular interest stands opposite the main house. The building has an H-shaped plan form. While alterations detract from the building, the quality and survival of its interior are noteworthy.
