Description

This is a single-storey, three-bay, direct entry house located in the townland of Tullyquilly, near Rathfriland, County Down. It is dated between 1820 and 1839. The house retains its original layout and an intact roof structure, now covered with corrugated asbestos sheeting over a thatched base. The walls are constructed of granite rubble with remains of harling. A windbreak porch with a timber ledged door is flush with the exterior, and is flanked to the right (southeast) by one and to the left by two windowless openings. There are no visible sills. The rear walls and gable ends have no openings. The house faces southwest and is part of a small settlement accessed by a winding lane, roughly one and a half miles from Rathfriland, towards Loughbrickland. The site originally included five buildings; two remain, along with the footprint of a third. The southwest end is marked by a modern field gate with stone walling and a two-unit outhouse. The remainder of the site has been landscaped. Historical maps from 1833 and 1860 show a total of five buildings, including the subject house. According to information provided by the owner in 2004, a date of 1758 is scratched into the internal plaster of another surviving building on the site. The house is considered to have architectural interest due to its proportions, plan form, structural system, setting, and group value, and exhibits local historical interest, social/cultural/economic importance, and rarity, being a vernacular thatched dwelling.
