Description
This is a single-storey former byre, constructed between 1980 and 1999 and now converted to office use. It forms part of an important vernacular clachan settlement. The building has undergone significant rebuilding and alteration. The roof is corrugated iron, painted and with concrete verges, and features no chimney. Rainwater downpipes discharge onto the left gable. Gutters are half-round metal. The walls are wet-dashed and painted, with no eaves corbel. The main elevation faces a yard and to the right of centre is a pair of sheeted carriage doors set within a shallow segmental arch. A half-glazed door screen is located on the inner face of the masonry. To the left of the doors is a 2/2 exposed box window with a granite cill, an external bell above and a bulkhead lamp to the extreme left. A post box is situated to the right of the window. The left gable has no openings, while an alarm bell is fixed to the apex. The rear wall contains three openings: a 1/1 sash window to the left, and two 2/2 sash windows to the right, along with a plastic vent and flue. The building occupies a prominent site overlooking the Kilkeel River, enclosed by dry boulder granite walls – some original, some rebuilt and some new. A few trees contribute to the site's character. Carriageways are paved with quarry dust/crushed shalestone, edged with granite kerbstones. Walkways are granite setts, and the remaining open space is grassed with small flower beds. A number of gates are present, some old and others newly made to traditional designs. Each building has a specially designed cast metal plaque as part of the refurbishment. The right gable has no openings. The clachan settlement is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map and subsequent editions.
