Description

This is a small, two-storey vernacular house, likely built between 1840 and 1859, and now derelict and in very poor condition. It is located near 22 Hilltown Road, Fofannyreagh, close to Kilcoo and Rathfriland in County Down. The building sits directly on the southeastern side of Hilltown Road.

The front (northwestern) facade features a slightly off-centre, shallow lean-to porch, which is now missing its door. To the left of the porch is a small window opening, with another to the right, and two smaller openings to the first floor. All of these openings have lost their frames. The southwestern and northeastern gables are blank. Attached to the northeastern gable are the remains of a single-storey gabled section, now largely collapsed. The rear facade is also blank. The exterior appears to have been harled at some point, but much of the rendering has fallen away, revealing a rubble construction. The roof is gabled, with remnants of natural slate covering it, although many slates from the front have fallen away. There are two rendered chimney stacks, one to each gable, and rendered parapets.

A building is depicted on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1859, but not on the 1834 map. Records from 1863 show the property was leased by Bridget Cunningham from Catherine O’Connor. The house appears to have been abandoned for a considerable time.
