Description
This is a single-storey, two-bay semi-detached vernacular dwelling, rebuilt between 1980 and 1999 on the footprint of an earlier house, and facing east-southeast. It forms part of an important vernacular grouping, known as a clachan, which was shown on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map and subsequent editions.
The building has a pitched natural slate roof with a blue clay ridge and raised concrete verges. A whitewashed masonry chimney rises from the free gable. Rainwater gutters are half round metal, and downpipes are turned onto the gable. The walls are wet-dashed and painted, incorporating large corner boulders. There is no eaves corbel. The principal elevation faces a yard. An entrance at the middle is approached by a single granite step and a concrete threshold, leading to a painted t+g (tongue and groove) sheeted door, lit by a bulkhead light. At ground floor level, a 1/1 sash window is located to the left, and a 2/2 window to the right. All windows have exposed boxes and granite cills. The left gable is blank. The rear wall has a 2/2 sash window at the left and a 6/6 sash window at the middle. A gas box and flue are located to the left of the left window, and a vent to the right. The right gable forms a party wall with the adjoining dwelling (reference HB16/05/001C).
The site is prominent, overlooking the Kilkeel River and delineated by dry boulder granite walls – some original, some rebuilt, and some new. A few important trees contribute to the character of the site. Carriageways are paved with quarry dust/crushed shalestone and edged with granite kerbstones. Walkways are granite setts, with the remaining open space covered in grass and small flower beds. A number of gates are present, some old, and others newly made to traditional designs. Each house has a specially designed cast metal plaque as part of the recent refurbishment. The building was formerly and currently used as a house and is owned by a housing association. It was delisted on March 1, 2002.
