Description

This granite war memorial was erected around 1925 as a memorial to those from the Newcastle area who fell in the Great War. The figure of the lion was carved by Frank Wiles, and later, the names of those who fell in World War II were added to the plinth. The memorial is constructed entirely in Mourne granite and comprises a tall rectangular plinth surmounted by an Art Deco figure of a lion at ease. The names of the fallen from both world wars are inscribed on the sides of the plinth. Originally situated slightly further south, the memorial was repositioned around 1986 to make way for the entrance façade of the ‘Tropicana’ swimming pool, now in front of the former Annesley Hotel (now the ‘Newcastle Centre’).
